Royal Pavilion – North Gate (Plein Air Study)
Watercolour & Gouache on 300gsm Canson Paper
8.3" × 5.8" (A5)

Painted on location in Brighton, this impressionistic plein air study captures the Royal Pavilion’s North Gate glowing with soft morning light. Created in a focused 40-minute session, the piece emphasises atmosphere over detail—broad strokes, shifting colours, and quick decisions give the work its sense of movement and immediacy.

The turquoise dome and minarets rise against a cool sky, while warm ochres and greens lead the eye through the archway toward the trees beyond. Layers of gouache sit atop transparent watercolour, adding depth and a painterly texture that brings the architecture to life without overworking the image.

What made this study special was the experience of painting it side by side with another artist, a New Zealander named Freeman, whom I’d met only moments before. We stood together in front of the gate, each working in our own style, sharing the unspoken connection that happens when two artists paint the same scene from life.

The result is an impressionistic watercolour and gouache study full of movement, spontaneity, and atmosphere—an honest record of a fleeting moment, a new artistic connection, and the beauty of Brighton’s most iconic landmark.

This is a one-of-a-kind original artwork on 300gsm Canson watercolour paper, ideal for collectors who appreciate plein air studies, expressive mark-making, and scenes from Brighton’s iconic Royal Pavilion.
