Painted on location in Vintgar Gorge near Lake Bled, Slovenia, this piece captures one of the most pristine and atmospheric landscapes I encountered during my travels.

The gorge is known for its striking turquoise water flowing through a dramatic canyon of rock and forest. Standing along the narrow wooden path above the river, surrounded by the sound of rushing water and fresh mountain air, I set up my easel to try and capture the scene directly from life.

The painting began with a couple of quick pencil sketches to understand the shapes and movement of the gorge before developing the final composition in watercolour and gouache on location. The focus of the piece is the luminous water flowing through the canyon, contrasted with the surrounding rock formations and greenery.

Painted en plein air, the work reflects the place's immediacy and atmosphere, capturing not just the landscape but the feeling of standing there in that moment.
